Frank A. Roa Jr., 48, of Portland, Oregon, passed away surrounded by those who loved him and whose lives were forever shaped by his courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice. A native Oregonian, Frank’s life was marked by resilience. He faced racial discrimination, periods of homelessness, and the many challenges of forging his own path. Yet he transformed every hardship into purpose, becoming a powerful advocate for those whose voices often go unheard.
Frank dedicated his life to community service and social progress. As the Executive Director of Umatilla Morrow Alternatives, he championed LGBTQ+ rights, expanded access to free HIV testing, and created safe, affirming spaces for support groups and community gatherings. Under his leadership, the organization became a lifeline for many across Eastern Oregon, offering acceptance, resources, and dignity to those who needed it most.
His work extended far beyond his title. Frank collaborated with local organizations, mentored young activists, and used his own lived experiences to inspire others to stand firmly in their truth. He was widely recognized for his contributions to equality, inclusion, and public health, and he remained a steadfast advocate for marginalized communities throughout his life.
Frank is survived by his mother, who remained a constant source of love and grounding throughout his journey. He is also survived by his life partner, Darrol Alston, who stood beside him with devotion and unwavering support. In addition, Frank leaves behind his brothers Anthony, Jessie, Daniel, and Isaac.
He is remembered as a resilient leader, a compassionate friend, and a tireless change-maker whose impact will continue to ripple through the communities he served. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the progress he helped build.
He will be deeply missed.
A service will be held at a later date.
