Janice M (Johnson) Howland

Janice M. Howland of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on April 18, 1931 in Clatskanie, Oregon to parents, Hawkin and Lottie Johnson. She passed away on November 29, 2018 in Hermiston, Oregon at the age of 87 years. Her Norwegian heritage was always a very important part of her life. When she was four years old her mother passed away. Her father and her two year old brother Robert, became the center of her life. Janice and Robert remained a formidable pair throughout the rest of her life. In 1950 she married Dale Chapman in Clatskanie, Oregon and soon after two daughters followed. In 1960 they moved to Hermiston, Oregon to open Hermiston Auto Parts. Together they became a strong part of the community while building a very successful business. Throughout the 1970's and 1980's they welcomed 6 grandchildren to their family that became the center of their world. They later divorced. Janice later married Elton Howland. She enjoyed traveling the world to experience new places. Janice was very involved in the Emblem Club, Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library, and Smart Reading. She cherished time watching and cheering on her grandchildren in whatever activity they were involved in and was blessed with the addition of 12 great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters: Sherry Thompson & husband Joe, Hermiston, OR and Peggy Stump & husband John, East Wenatchee, WA; brother: Robert Johnson, Portland, OR; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Janice was preceded in death by her husbands: Dale Chapman and Elton Howland, daughter: Nancy Karen Chapman, and her parents.

Janice’s family would like to give a special thank you to the caregivers at the Tuscan House at Guardian Angel Homes for their loving care and compassion.

A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston, Oregon.

A private family burial will held at a later date at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.
