FORREST “WOODY” STARRETT

Forrest “Woody” Starrett, 93, of Hermiston passed away on Sunday September 24, 2017.

Woody was born November 13, 1923 in Portland, Oregon the son of James and Josie (Kennedy) Starrett. He lived in Dayville throughout his childhood where he attended school and graduated from high school in the early 1940's. After high school, he served in the US Army during World War II. He studied engineering at Princeton University where he had the opportunity to meet Albert Einstein. After his honorable discharge, Woody moved to Hermiston, Oregon where he has resided since. He owned and operated Starrett’s Decor in Hermiston for over twenty five years. He also served as the Umatilla County Commissioner for two terms and the Port of Umatilla Commissioner for twenty years.

Woody enjoyed going to his cabin in the mountains near Heppner. Some of his favorite things were teaching his grandchildren about nature,“Bucky” his pet deer, 4 wheeling with the grandchildren, carpentry work and helping other people.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, David.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Brian Starrett, Judy Deihl, Lenielle Sloan, Patty Hackler and Lorrie Sandoval; sister, Joy DeMain; fourteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday September 30, 2017 in the Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston.
