Thomas D. “Tom” Watkins was born on June 1, 1924 in Halfway, Oregon to parents, Thomas A. and Laura N. Hensley Watkins. He died on February 13, 2017 at his home in Hermiston, Oregon at the age of 92 years. Tom was raised and attended school in Halfway, Oregon. He then joined the United States Army/Air Force. Tom’s desire was to become a pilot, but fortunately he had to be hospitalized and was unable to take the pilot test. He then became a radio operator overseas. Tome was honorably discharged and returned to marry Barbara Brown in November of 1946. They were blessed with their daughter: Judith Anne, & sons: John Daulton and Stephen Albert. Barbara went to be with the Lord in 1970 and so began a new chapter in his life. Tom was a car salesman in Pendleton and Hermiston throughout the years. He and his wife, Merla have been together for the last 8 years. They were able to go to Halfway in the spring to see the beautiful flowers and he reminisced about his childhood. With the help of Mom, Merla, the family was able to have many wonderful family get together’s over the last few years. The times were so special and gave his grandchildren precious time with their grandpa.

Toms favorite time of the day was early in the morning when he could pray and spend time communing with the Lord. He would receive wonderful truths that he always would share with his family and friends. Tom enjoyed sweets and was blessed with many wonderful cooks in his life. Reading was a real blessing to him. He spent many hours reading books of the Lord as well as books to improve one’s walk in this life and the study of history.

John remembers the many times playing music together. They both played the violin and the guitar. Steve remembers special times; the Pendleton Roundup, Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood movies. Judee has so many wonderful memories of time spent together with her dad. There was not an hour when the Lord wasn’t included in there time together. “Music was the heart of my father. He played the violin for over 80 years. I was fortunate to play duets with my dad for many years. It was a very special time for us.” He continued to play with his good friends until it was no longer possible. Tom still loved to hear them play.

Tom was a blessing to all who knew him, especially his wife Merla. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife: Merla; daughter: Judee; sons: John & Steve; sister: Dolores & her husband Russ; grandchildren: RaeAnne, Darlene, Mark & Matt, great granddaughter: Desiree’; great great granddaughter: Trinity; several nieces and nephews.

Esther Fife was a dear friend and played a very special part in Tom’s life for over 10 years before she passed away.
