Jane Starner (née Irwin) passed away Monday, October 10 at her home in Umatilla after a prolonged fight with cancer. She was born in Portland, Oregon October 16, 1951. Jane grew up in Stevenson, Washington and Milton Freewater, Oregon and graduated from Eastern Oregon University with a degree in Education. After taking several teaching jobs throughout Eastern Oregon and Idaho, she settled in Umatilla in 1985 and married her husband, George, in 1993 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Those who loved Jane knew her to have a quick wit and warm smile. She was fast to laugh and generous with her time and love, qualities which served her well in her teaching career. She taught at Clara Brownell Middle School until retirement. Jane was an active community leader and was given the 2014 Umatilla Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award. The entire community will mourn her passing and will remember her frankness, industriousness, and warmth.

She was predeceased by her father Hugh and brother John.

She is survived by her husband George; son Christopher; daughters Kimi, Niki, Klista and Cindi; mother Janet; sister Nancy, brothers Phil and Dan; and fourteen grandchildren.

She was loved fiercely by her family and friends, all of whom will miss her terribly.

A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on her birthday, October 16, 2016, in Hermiston.
